Tom Hamburger(II)

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, shortly after the end of a 20 year long dictatorship, the re-opening of Brazil to the outside world and to the imagination of its artists. During the nineteens, there was a boom of incredible and magical Brazilian children tv-shows that shaped an entire generation. I grew up watching those tv shows and I believe that those shows inspired me to be a filmmaker and storyteller. I went on to be an undergrad literature student while I took an internship job on every available film crew I could find. When I was ready to direct films, I wasn't surprised when I realized that I loved to work with stories with a lot of fantasy, magic and imagination. Even when dealing with difficult subjects I find that a little bit of imagination can help us go a long way. Today, I always try to combine these elements in my work - important social issues presented through poetic, imaginative stories. In fiction, I directed the show "Marcelo Quince and Hammer" (Paramount+/Nickleodeon) nominated as Best Children Show in the Rose D'or Latinos award. Also I created, wrote and produced the children series "The Cave of Petra" and "The History Tube", winner of the TAL Awards. As a fiction screenwriter, I worked on the two season Brazilian series "Brotherhood" (Netflix). In non-fiction, I co directed the feature documentary "Tell me" (PÖFF/Jihlava Film Festival) and "Bear Hands" (Olympic Memories, ESPN). Furthermore, I attended the directing workshop led by Werner Herzog "Filming in Peru with Werner Herzog" and co-directed the short film Daimara y el Baile Zombie, recently screened at the 28th Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes and the 28th Festival Internacional de Valdivia. I am a Cine Qua Non Alumni, where I develop my debut feature film project "The Arsonist". I am co-writing the feature film "The Machine", produced by Amaia Produções, a film adaptation of Valter Hugo Mãe's book "A Máquina de Fazer Espanhóis".
