Marcelle Abela is a Maltese-American filmmaker, composer, and the founder of Avinu Films. She writes, directs, produces, and often scores her own films, composing the music before picture editing commences. This process shapes both the films' cinematic and musical language from a single creative vision. Drawing on her music background, she approaches filmmaking as a synthesis of image, sound, and storytelling, creating works in which narrative and score are conceived as an inseparable artistic whole.
Abela's films are distinguished by their visual lyricism, emotional depth, and engagement with themes of resilience, dignity, forgiveness, and cultural memory. Whether examining national identity, spiritual experience, the legacy of war, or intimate human transformation, her work seeks to illuminate the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Abela's filmography includes the award-winning films Mikha'El, Ukraine's Soul, America's Woman, and Whispers From the Core, as well as the animated short Punch's Journey. Her work has screened internationally and received recognition from festivals and organizations across Europe, North America, Russia, and Asia.
As both filmmaker and composer, Abela exhibits a distinctive voice that combines historical inquiry, visual poetry, and original music to create emotionally resonant and thought-provoking cinema. She is also involved in film restoration and preservation, undertaking 4K restorations of historic motion pictures from 16mm/35mm film elements for contemporary audiences. Abela is currently in production on her third feature film Urakami, a historical drama set in Nagasaki in the aftermath of the atomic bombing.
