Biography

Max-Arthur Mantle is a Jamaican-born writer, photographer and filmmaker who's work is centered around black, LGBT, and Jamaican narratives.

He studies Journalism and photography at Howard University and served one year in the US military (Navy).

His career began as a freelance photographer in Miami Beach and New York City, specializing in men's fashion, swim, underwear, body and nudes. He is known for having shot the last cover of BLUE+ 66, Australia's premiere high-end photo-art magazine. His work has been featured on the covers and editorial pages of American and international magazines, culminating in "Beach Boys," a photo book published by Bruno Gmuender (Berlin, Germany) a self-published limited edition photo book "The Boys of Summer" featuring a complete collection of his work.

Mantle step back from his livelihood and lifestyle as a photographer to write his debut novel, "Batty Bwoy" (2016), a coming of age story that looks at homophobia in Jamaica and the plights of a young, black, gay Jamaica navigating America in the '90s in search of love and self.

The novel was well received by black, LGBTQ+, Caribbean Americans and it spawned the documentary VISIBLE - The LGBTQ Caribbean Diaspora, which screened in North America, Europe and Africa.

He is based in Los Angeles, developing several film projects as writer, director and producer.
