Biography

X. Hill is an award-winning costume designer using her talents to create surreal worlds for the stage and screen. Her work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Variety, and Rolling Stone. She is interested in telling the stories of people of color, LGBTQIA+ folx, and those who are oppressed and underrepresented, striving to depict their struggles and triumphs sensitively and authentically through world-building and costume.

Her past projects of Romeo and Juliet (Oregon Shakespeare Festival) and The Carolyn Bryant Project (Center for New Performance; New York Times Critic's Pick) are two examples that exemplify successful executions of these goals.

Romeo and Juliet tell the classic story in an encampment of unhoused people in Oakland, CA. She used the production's BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ actors to tell the tale of socioeconomic disparity and privilege in a new light. X., a Bay Area native, used her creative design skills to build unique and authentic costumes for this world.

The Carolyn Bryant Project is the non-linear story of Emmett Till and Carolyn Bryant and their fateful encounter at a candy counter in Money, Mississippi. X. grounded the play using period clothing while adding to the surreal storytelling by creating a "Gone with the Wind" inspired look for Carolyn's grand entrance.

Other past projects include Dame de la Lumière (Rolling Stone), The Cymbeline Project (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), King Lear (The Wallis), and Concerto for Having Fun with Elvis on Stage (REDCAT).

X. has worked alongside talented costume designers on television shows and movies such as Abbott Elementary, Dear White People, Loki, Grown-ish, The Tomorrow War, and Born a Champion.

X. holds a Master of Fine Arts in Costume Design from CalArts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Eugene Lang Liberal Arts College. She also received the NAACP President's Award and the Young-Howse Theatre Journal Award for Costume Designer of the Year.
