She refused to lighten her skin despite pressure from certain music professionals who promised her a bigger audience if she did so.

When her second studio album "Nakamura" was released on November 2, 2018, on that same day nine of her songs appeared in the Apple Music top 10, which was a first for a French female artist.

Her stage name Aya Nakamura, derives from the last name from the character Hiro Nakamura of the American science fiction television series Heroes.

I wrote 'Djadja' after I heard a rumor about me. A 'Djadja' is a liar. The name itself does not mean anything, I could have picked any random name. I invented the term Djadja to refer to a guy I looked up to... and was eventually disappointed in. Unfortunately, people often tend to believe the man's side of the story. Why should we assume the girls are mythomaniacs? It's also about an upfront girl who tells it like it is.

It made me realize this business was going to be very tough for a dark-skinned woman like me. But it also made me more determined

I try to be as spontaneous as possible and to pour my first thoughts into the lyrics. I want them to resonate emotionally with people.

I don't know if that's what makes the music universal, but I think the honesty I bring to it, the constant drive for something new — not just chasing trends but putting out things I'm 100% proud of and never compromising artistically — maybe that's what connects with people. I try to follow my instincts, my creative impulses, while maintaining a high level of quality.

Everyone sings in my family. But I'm the only one who dared to sing 'for real.'
