Monique Efta is a queer director and producer whose work explores psychological survival, power, and the fragile architecture of identity. Raised in the American Midwest and shaped by early experiences navigating structured belief systems and diverse cultural environments, her filmmaking investigates the tension between personal autonomy and inherited narratives.
Her films blend genre language with intimate emotional realism, often centering characters who exist at the margins of societal expectation. Through visually expressive storytelling and a commitment to atmosphere, Efta’s work examines how systems - familial, cultural, or institutional - imprint themselves on the body and psyche.
She has produced and directed award-winning music videos and short films and is currently developing her debut feature screenplay. Based in California, she continues to build work that seeks catharsis without simplification.
