Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Rex Owen Waide started writing stories before he could write, because he is an avid daydreamer. In high school he wrote several novels that he wishes were rotting in the desk in the attic of his first real job. He then transitioned to visual arts--drawing, painting, and sculpting--before engaging with the idea of filmmaking. He was gifted a camera by a community college mentor in 2013, but did not learn how to properly use the camera until 2015 when he met his fiancee, Diana Vega-Rojas, also a filmmaker and constantly collaborator, who was the major spark that inspired Rex to see filmmaking as an artform. Rex considers all his endeavors in the various disciplines in art as the build-up that has led to his pursuit in films.
