Biography

Jackie Shane was an American soul and rhythm & blues singer, who was prominent in the music scene of Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the 1960s. Born Jack Jerome Shane in the Jim Crow South era, Shane who was openly a trans-gendered woman lived primarily in Toronto. She became a part of that city's rising R&B scene until 1971, when with no explanation, she left the music industry and moved to Los Angeles (later it was known she moved to care for her ailing mother) and later returned to her hometown of Nashville where she resided until her death. Jackie Shane's first issued recording was "Any Other Way" (with the B-side "Sticks and Stones") in the fall of 1962; the song became her biggest chart hit, reaching No. 2 on Toronto's CHUM Chart in 1963.
