Biography

Alina Zagitova is a Russian figure skater who competed in single skating. Olympic champion 2018 in single skating, World champion (2019) and Europe champion (2018), winner of the Grand Prix final (2017), champion of Russia (2018). The only single figure skater in the history of Russia and the second in world history after Yuna Kim to win all the titles in world figure skating (Grand Slam).

Alina was born in Izhevsk (Udmurtia), her parents are ice hockey coach Ilnaz Zagitov and Leysan Zagitova. Has a younger sister Sabina, who also did figure skating. Began figure skating at the age of four under the guidance of Damira Pichugina. When she was six years old, she switched to rhythmic gymnastics, but soon her mother brought her to the skating rink again. In total, she tried to quit figure skating seven times as a child.

Since 2015, she began training under the guidance of Eteri Tutberidze, Sergey Dudakov and Daniil Gleykhengauz. Zagitova completed her only season among juniors by winning all the major titles in junior skating. During her junior career, she set five junior world records. She took first place in total points and won the gold medal at the age of 15 years and 281 days, becoming the second youngest winner at the Olympic Games among single figure skaters after Tara Lipinski. She is the first figure skater since 1985 to win the world championship in her first season after winning the Olympics. The last time such an achievement was achieved by German figure skater Katarina Witt.
