- Her husband Hemen Gupta had been a freedom fighter before becoming a film director. After her husband's death, she struggled to get the freedom fighter's pension. After repeated visits to the pension office in New Delhi, India and a meeting with the then-Member of Parliament (MP) Rajesh Khanna in 1992-1993, she was finally able to get the pension.
- Her maiden name is Ratna Sengupta. She is the daughter of Satish Chandra Sengupta, headmaster of a local high school in Rajshahi (present day Bangladesh), and Kamalini Sengupta.
- She worked with actor Pradeep Kumar in a college play and introduced her husband to him and he became part of the trusted team.
- She was an accomplished singer, having trained in Calcutta, India. She trained in multiple genres, especially Rabindrasangeet. She was also Sachin Dev Burman's student for a very short time.
