Nathan was born into a surfing family. He is the grandson of big wave surfing pioneer Pat Curren & Jeanine. his father is the 3-times ASP World Surf Champion Tom Curren & his uncle Joe was also a notable surfer. His sister Lee-Ann Curren is a pro surfer and has represented France.
