Biography

Hailing from Dublin and raised in Westmeath, Matthew Jones developed a passion for film at a young age and began making short films at ten. He studied cinematography and film production at Ballyfermot College of Further Education, where he wrote and directed the graduate film Rose (2016), which screened to audiences nationwide.

It was the behind-the-scenes documentaries included on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Extended Edition DVD that inspired his passion for the filmmaking process.

When he was ten, he decided to become a filmmaker after attending a matinee showing of King Kong (2005). He spent the following months studying the King Kong: Peter Jackson's Production Diaries (2005) DVD, recreating the jungle sets at home as handcrafted miniatures to make his own epic adventure monster film.

For his work with the Action School of Film, he was selected as one of 25 young people across Europe to compete in a Pan-European intensive filmmaking programme as part of the Fresh Film Festival.
