Berlinale 2020

Biography

Jean-Loup Pinson

Mini bio

  • Jean-Loup Pinson is a multi-instrumentalist, artist and composer who blends a background in jazz guitar and classical composition with a wide range of influences, from electronic music to rock and experimental avant-garde. His versatile work spans solo projects, collaborative releases, and music for film, TV, video games and stage performances.

Described as "one of the most exciting cross-genre voices emerging today" (Atwood Magazine) and possessing "a rare blend of technical skill and artistic intuition" (Voice Magazine), his recent credits include Ema Edosio's When Nigeria Happens, the first African film ever to open the Locarno Film Festival's Open Doors section; the Berlinale Special selection documentary Speer Goes to Hollywood, directed by Vanessa Lapa; and the internationally successful contemporary dance show Comrades in the Dark, choreographed by Caitlin Barnett.

He has also contributed to major studio film scores such as Gunpowder Milkshake (StudioCanal) starring Karen Gillan, Ghost Stories (Lionsgate) starring Martin Freeman, and A Mistake (Universal) starring Elizabeth Banks.

In 2024, Pinson released the critically acclaimed concept album A Moment of Deathlessness, a bold fusion of Emily Dickinson's poetry with choral music, hip-hop, and electronic beats. Earmilk magazine praised it as "a triumph of artistic daring and execution-a journey worth taking."

Pinson holds a Bachelor of Music with first-class honours from the London College of Contemporary Music and is a member of BAFTA Connect. Holding dual French and British nationality, he is based in London, UK.
