Aureliano Chaves was a State Deputy (1958-1966) and Federal Deputy (1966-1974). He was selected as the governor of Minas Gerais state (1975-1978), was elected vice-president (1979-1985) under
João Figueiredo and acted as the interim President of Brazil during the health problems of
João Figueiredo in 1981 and 1983. Aureliano was the Minister of Mines and Energy during the
José Sarney government (1985-1988). Aureliano Chaves was a candidate for President in the 1989 Brazilian election and finished in 9th place in the first round.
