Hasan Oswald is a Harlem-based filmmaker working across documentary and narrative. His vérité-driven work is marked by emotional immediacy, uncommon intimacy, and sustained access to people living on the margins. His debut feature documentary, Higher Love (2020)-shot over four years in Camden, New Jersey-won the Slamdance Grand Jury Award and established his immersive, character-driven voice.
His most recent feature, Mediha (2024), executive produced by Emma Thompson, received 15 Grand Jury Awards and 15 additional honors, won both the Grierson and SIMA Awards, and earned PGA and IDA nominations. Hasan was also named one of DOC NYC’s 40 Under 40 documentary rising stars to watch, co-presented by HBO Documentary Films. A Sundance Feature Film Development Track finalist, his work moves fluidly between documentary and narrative while remaining grounded in lived experience and moral urgency
