Biography

Candace Nicholas-Lippman is an NAACP Theatre Award-winning playwright, actress, spoken word artist, and producer whose work spans television, theater, and poetry.

She is the creator and performer of the NAACP Theatre Award-winning autobiographical solo show A Rose Called Candace, which has been produced in Los Angeles and Off-Broadway. Its 2025 Los Angeles production was produced in collaboration with JuVee Productions, the production company founded by Viola Davis and Julius Tennon. The production has also received recognition from the BroadwayWorld Awards and continues to resonate with audiences through its deeply personal exploration of faith, resilience, forgiveness, and freedom.

On screen, Nicholas-Lippman is best known for her role as Janelle on the Emmy Award-winning Starz series Blindspotting and as Yari on Freeform’s Good Trouble, where she debuted her original spoken word piece, "Dear Black Girl." Additional television credits include Grey’s Anatomy on ABC and Grounded on Facebook Watch.

Her stage credits include a Best Lead Actress in a Comedy nomination for her performance in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fat Ham, as well as productions of Head of Passes at the Mark Taper Forum, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and In the Next Room.

In addition to her work in theater and television, Nicholas-Lippman is an accomplished spoken word artist whose poetry has been featured at Essence Festival, Da Poetry Lounge, Amazon Studios, Fox News, WACO Theater Center, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, and ABC Studios. Her poetry albums PARTS OF ME and A POET’S CRY were both considered for Grammy Awards.
