At the time of his death, Ryder Buck was struggling with Stage 4 testicular cancer. He was diagnosed in August 2012, and he underwent surgery to remove the tumor and started his first round of chemotherapy. It made him feel fatigued, but the treatments were successful. But despite all those hardships, he was still determined to pursue his career in music with his own band: Ryder Buck and the Breakers.
