Biography

François-Xavier Durandy is an award-winning French translator, specialising in subtitling, dubbing and script translation. His main working languages are English, German and Hindi/Urdu. His subtitles have accompanied short and feature films on their journey to prestigious festivals (Cannes, Locarno, Directors' Fortnight, Karlovy Vary, Festival des 3 Continents, Les Arcs European Film Festival, Brussels Short Film Festival, FFAST, etc.). He is also known for his work on Guru Dutt's classics Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). A major part of his work is also localising German documentary films for various TV channels, most notably Arte. In 2015, he was awarded the ATAA Prize for the best subtitle adaptation of a non-English-language film for his work on Ugly (2013) (dir. Anurag Kashyap). He has served on the jury of Vesoul FICA (International Asian Film Festival) and Rencontres cinématographiques de Digne's Short Film Competition. François-Xavier Durandy holds degrees from the Université de la Sorbonne nouvelle and Inalco (Paris). He has taught translation and subtitling at Inalco and several French universities.
