Biography

Ulysses Guimarães was one of the major political figures in Brazil and one of the most respected as well. Charismatic, enthusiastic and very good with words, a political genial and master of his trade that comes at rare times. He assumed in several political functions such as congressman (through 11 consecutive mandates in between the 1950's until 1990's), speaker of the house, minister of João Goulart's administration and even managed to launch a presidential campaign in 1989, which didn't succeed. During the military regime (1964-1985), he was part of the MDB - (Democratic Brazilian Movement) the only opposition party against the military and he became an important symbol of resistance. The party survived the regime, turning itself into the current PMDB. Doctor Ulysses, as he was best known between his colleagues and the press, was one of the key individuals who voted for the nation's new constitution, developed in 1988, which is considered the greatest of all constitutions due to its wider scope and embracing many causes and people who didn't have much prior to its release. He was truly important during the impeachment process against president Collor - his rival during the 1989 elections - due to alarming corruption charges. In charge of proceedings, Ulysses managed to get each the impeachment votes of his house being televised, a then rare occurrence when it comes to politics in Brazil. Sadly, he didn't live long enough to see Collor resign his presidential term. He died on a helicopter crash in Angra dos Reis a few months prior to the president's resignation. Along with Ulysses, his wife Dona Mora, former senator Severo Gomes, his wife and the pilot also perished in the crash. Mr. Guimarães' body was the only one never found, which led to many conspiracy theories over the years.

He ran for Brazil's presidency in 1989 in the first direct elections in the country since 1960. Though quite popular and respected by the majority of people, his campaign was unsuccessful and he finished in fifth place, even losing to the unknown Fernando Collor de Mello, who was elected president after a second turn against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. When Collor administration was accused of several corruption charges, Ulysses was fundamental in the proceedings against the president which included an open and televised vote from the congress members in voting Collor's impeachment (1992).

Congressman for eleven consecutive terms (1951-1992). Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (1961-1962). Speaker of the house in two different occasions (1956-1958 and 1985-1989). A main figure of the opposition against the military regime between the 1960's and 1980's.
