Louis XIV (Louis Dieudonné; 5 September 1638 - 1 September 1715), also known as Louis the Great (Louis Le Grand) or the Sun King (Le Roi Soleil), was King of France from 14 May 1643 until his death in 1715. His reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country in history. Although Louis XIV's France was emblematic of the age of absolutism in Europe, the King surrounded himself with a variety of significant political, military and cultural figures, such as Mazarin, Colbert, Louvois, the Grand Condé, Turenne, Vauban, Boulle, Molière, Racine, Boileau, La Fontaine, Lully, Charpentier, Marais, DE Lalande, Le Brun, Rigaud, Bossuet, Le Vau, Mansart, Charles Perrault, Claude Perrault and Le Nôtre.

He reigned as King of France for seventy-two years and one-hundred and ten days, the longest recorded reign of any monarch in human history.
Appointed his nephew Philippe d'Orléans Régent of the Kingdom of France and Navarre yet structured the Régence in such a way so that Philippe would head it in name only. But Louis had a change of heart, ordering his ministers and courtiers to obey Philippe as "he will govern the kingdom". The day after Louis's death, the Parlements gave Philippe permission to form his own council. 72 years earlier, Louis's mother had Parlements annul her husband's will, in which he had set up a Régence, making her Régent until Louis was declared of age. Philippe served as Régent from September 2, 1715 to February 15, 1723, when Louis XV, Louis's great-grandson, was declared of age on his 13th birthday.
