James C. Williamson

James and his production label, The Department of Special Projects, are at the forefront of Africa's genre film renaissance. Formerly a content producer for Sony Pictures, Paramount and Netflix, James has since written and produced debut features by some of South Africa's most celebrated export talents. He co-wrote and produced director Ryan Kruger's debut Fried Barry, which premiered as a Shudder Original in 2021, earned a "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes and found distribution in over 70 countries. James collaborated with Dust/Gunpowder & Sky for the release of his high-concept sci-fi short Exo Sapien in 2023 and his melt movie remake Street Trash was released by Cineverse in 2024 after its international premiere at IFFR. His latest film by debut director Meekaaeel Adam, The Trek, is a Raindance Official Selection and a Fantasporto Director's Week Jury Prize winner - with Variety calling the film "unbelievably stunning" ahead of its worldwide release by Global Constellation and Amazon.
