Biography

Nish Gera is a film director and screenwriter based in Madrid. Born in India, he has lived in Udaipur, New Delhi, Mumbai, New York City, Brussels, Berlin, London and Madrid, and that movement runs through the work: displacement, queerness and the sexual politics of the present are its recurring subjects.

He has made five short films. Scar Tissue (2017), about a Syrian refugee and the man he meets over one night in Amsterdam, was a finalist for the Iris Prize and won awards at Rochester ImageOut, FilmOut San Diego, the Los Angeles Diversity Film Festival and OutlantaCon. Look Baba I'm Happy (2018) follows a gay Afghan man returning to Berlin after his father's death, and took the Jury Prize for Best Narrative Short at Queer North. MOTTA (2020) is a documentary portrait of the Brazilian artist Fabio da Motta. Opium Dream (2025), also built around da Motta's shibari ropework, is a documentary-experimental short in Spanish. Arriba Beach (2025), a 35-minute fiction short set on the Portuguese coast and co-written with Trevor Norris, won Best of the Fest at the Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and placed second for the Jury Prize at OUTshine.

Together his films have screened at more than 100 festivals. He is developing his first feature, The Taj Motel, selected for Torino Film Labs. Some of his films credit him as Nishchaya Gera.
