Biography

Johan Olof Wallin was born on October 15, 1779 in Stora Tuna församling, Stora Tuna, Dalarna, Sweden. Johan Olof is known for Charlotte Löwensköld (1930), Miss Julie (1951) and Vaermlaenningarna (1932). Johan Olof was married to Anna Maria Dimander (1781-1866). Johan Olof died on June 30, 1839 in Uppsala, Uppland, Sweden.

Johan Olof Wallin was a member of the Swedish Academy (Svenska Akademien) from 1810 to 1839 and held chair number 1 during that time. He was primarily responsible for the 1819 hymn book, for which he was responsible for the text/translation/adaptation of 286 different hymns (out of 500). Of these, 222 were retained in the hymn book of 1937.

Johan Olof Wallin was, at the time of his death on June 30, 1839, still registered in the Sankt Nikolai parish in Stockholm in the Swedish population register, but he had been appointed Archbishop in Uppsala in 1837, where he was also located at the time of his death.

Johan Olof Wallin is buried at 'Norra begravningsplatsen' (Northern Cemetery), block 02, grave number 555, in Solna, a burial site that he himself inaugurated on June 9, 1827, as the primary pastor of the Sankt Nikolai congregation in Stockholm.

Many other famous Swedes are also buried in the same cemetery, such as Alfred Nobel, Salomon August Andrée, Per Albin Hansson, Gösta Ekman, August Strindberg, Ragnar Östberg, Ingrid Bergman, and Lena Nyman.
