- Frei died in 1982 apparently following routine surgery of a hiatal hernia. In August 2023, by the Chilean Supreme Court, as it was found that Montalva was not a homicide victim.
- His son, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, became the 31st President of Chile in 1994.
- A statue of Eduardo Frei is located outside La Moneda Palace on Constitution Square.
- Has avenues named after him in the cities of Santiago de Chile, Rancagua and Punta Arenas.
