In the aftermath of India's upset victory over the West Indies to claim the 1983 World Cup, the pace quartet comprising of Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall and Andy Roberts, supported by Winston Davis, on its return tour of India in late 1983 specifically targeted Amarnath and reduced him to a shocking return of 1 run in 6 innings, resulting in Amarnath being dropped midway across the 6 test series.

Member of the Indian National Cricket Team(1969-88). Although India played 119 tests in the mentioned time span, Amarnath appeared in only 69 of them due to his frequent clashes with the Board Of Cricket Control In India.

Man-of-the-Match for his all-round performances which helped India win both the semifinals against England and the finals against the West Indies of the 1983 World Cup. Amarnath was also India's vice-captain under good friend and legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev.

Scored 4378 test runs at an average of 42.50, including 11 centuries and 24 fifties. However, Amarnath had a unique distinction of scoring at a better rate overseas than at home, as evidenced by his away figures of 3000 runs at 51.86 with 9 centuries compared to a home tally of only 1300 runs at a less than mediocre 30.47 with 2 tons.

World renowned for his courage and ability to score against express fast bowling, most of Amarnath's centuries came after he was severely injured in the same match. His maiden test hundred was scored at the W.A.C.A. in Perth during the 1977 tour after Jeff Thomson broke his jaw, forcing Amarnath to eat only ice-cream for the day. His 109 in the opening test of the 1982 tour of Pakistan came up after Imran Khan, then at his peak, broke his wrist whilst he was trying to defend with his gloves. In the test at Barbados during the 1982-83 tour of the West Indies, he was felled with a sharp bouncer from Michael Holding. Amarnath got back on his feet without any support and stood upright at the crease. Holding's next delivery was also a bouncer but rather than ducking, Amarnath hooked it for a boundary and ended the test with scores of 58 and 117.

Son of iconic Indian cricketer Nanik Bharadwaj Amarnath, also fondly known as Lala Amarnath. His younger brother Surinder also played for India, but despite scoring a century on debut he was dropped.

Amarnath toured all 6 opposition test playing nations during his active career, averaging over 50 in 4 of them namely Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Australia. In the only nations he failed to accomplish this feat, namely England and New Zealand, he combined played a mere 12 innings.

His average of 63.36 is the second best for any batsman against the full-strength bowling line-up of the West Indies, with Amarnath's tenure comprising of the likes of Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall and Colin Croft. The best happens to be Australian Steve Waugh who averaged 76.83 against the combined might of Ian Bishop, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh at their peaks.

Portrayed his father and Indian cricket legend Lala Amaranth in the sports film 83(2021). Amarnath himself was portrayed by actor Saqib Salim.

First cricketer to be dismissed for handling the ball, the incident occurred during the Australian tri-series in 1985. Also the first cricketer to be dismissed for obstructing the field, the incident occurred during a match against Sri Lanka in 1989.
