Biography

Samman Roy is a filmmaker based in Kolkata, India. He started his filmmaking career with TVF - a Mumbai based renowned production company, after leaving a well-paying job at a multinational IT company. Later he started making his own short films under independent banners in 2017. His short films Aastha (2018), Before The Rains (2019), Mail (2020), Wheels (2022) are available on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Hoichoi, Addatimes, MovieSaints and Soleil Space. He has completed his Master of Arts in Film Studies from Jadavpur University and is a former Faculty of Media Sciences at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. Samman has over 40 directorial projects in his bio, including short films, adfilms, music videos, corporate films and a feature.

Samman's feature film "The Exile" was selected among the TOP 10 Recommended Films of NFDC Film Bazaar 2023 - the only live action feature film in the list. At the end of the Film Bazaar, the film was awarded the Film Bazaar Recommends Award for the year in the Viewing Room category by Prasad Labs. It premiered at Jagran Film Festival, Mumbai in March, 2025. It is being distributed worldwide by Buffalo 8 - an LA based Distribution company and releases on Amazon Prime Video, Fandango At Home, Verizon Fios, Xfinity & Hoopla on 19.09.2025.

Samman's recent short film "Unmarried Couples Not Allowed" which deals with the topic of countless unmarried couples being denied dignity and privacy in public spaces, especially hotels in India was selected in the North American Bengali Conference 2025 Bengali Film Festival, held in Toronto in July, 2025. The film won the "Visionary Film Award" in the competition. It was also a part of NFDC Film Bazaar's Viewing Room in 2024.

Samman is also a published author of two books named "Memories of A Millennial" and "Adh Dojon Bhoutik Goppo", which are available on Amazon and Google Play Books. He has worked for brands like Mahindra Tractors, Raja Udyog Pvt Ltd, Cyberpeace Organization, Cold Roll Ice Cream, Midnapore Hatcheries as a director.
