    David Johnson attended Clinton (IA) High School where he earned first-team Class 4A All-State honors from the Des Moines Register and Iowa Newspaper Association as a senior in 2009. David Johnson accounted for a school record 42 TDs as a senior and is the Clinton HS all-time leader in career receptions, career receiving yards, career and single-season total offense and single game record for TDs (6). Other notable achievements are: 2010 Shrine Bowl All-Star game invitee, two-time Drake and state qualifier in track, second-place finish in 4x200 and 4x400 relays at the Drake Relays, second-team all-conference in basketball as a junior, and maintained over a 3.0 GPA throughout high school. Johnson also has twins sisters, Darnecia and Danielle and is a Physical Education major.

    The Cardinals third round selection (86th overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft, Johnson became just the second Northern Iowa player ever selected by the Cardinals, joining Brandon Keith, who was taken in the seventh round (225th overall) in 2008. A 2014 Associated Press FCS All-American selection, Johnson is the 17th Northern Iowa player ever to be taken in the NFL Draft and just the second RB (Randy Schultz, 74th overall, Cleveland). He was UNI's highest draft pick in 15 years (Brad Meester, 60th overall in 2000 to the Jaguars). During his career at Northern Iowa, Johnson broke 15 school records, including the career and single-season marks for rushing yards, rushing TDs, rushing yards per game, all-purpose yards, all-purpose yards per game and total TDs. While at UNI, Johnson earned his way on the Dean's List twice for having a GPA of 3.5 or above and was a 3.0 honoree for multiple semesters.
