Marie Rouanet received several decorations and distinctions: the Legion of Honour in 2010; the Enric Mouly Prize from the Languedoc Academy for Luxueuse austérité in 2006; and the Jean Morer Prize for L'Arpenteur in 2012. She has been a member of the Languedoc Academy of Arts, Letters and Sciences since 2007.

She was also a columnist and director of documentary films on religious phenomena.

She received a Catholic religious education at the private school, but also at the parish youth center and in summer camps, while her family was only practicing.

Marize Rouanet was a writer, columnist, editor, ethnologist, singer in Occitan; Occitan activist; elected to the municipality of Béziers for four terms (1977-2001).

A significant part of her life has been dedicated to Occitan for a long time.

Since she was very interested in the history and the ethnography of her region, she started to write poems and songs in Occitan and was a member of the so-called Nova Chançon (New Song) along with Patric, Joan-Pau Verdier or Rosina de Pèira.

Her father was raised in Lacaune by his grandparents and was bilingual, speaking more Occitan than French. She overheard conversations between him and his father, his aunt, his mother. Without my realizing it, the Occitan language seeped into her being. She chose Occitan as her elective in her second year of high school.

After attending teacher training college, she joined the Nouvelle Chanson Occitane (New Occitan Song) movement in the 1970s, a movement committed to cultural and linguistic activism, alongside her husband Yves Rouquette, as well as Claude Marti, Patric, and many others. A singer-songwriter, Marie Rouanet released a dozen albums. In 1971, she published a bilingual anthology, Occitanie 1970, Les poètes de la décolonisation (Occitanie 1970, The Poets of Decolonization), with P.J. Oswald publishers, a landmark work in the history of the Occitan movement.

Marie Rouanet has written around forty novels, essays and chronicles. Her most remarkable works are undoubtedly Nous les filles (with its counterpart Du côté des hommes ) and Luxueuse austérité (which she was presenting on the 2 a.m. Saturday afternoon program on " France Culture , then presented by Frédéric Mitterrand (the cousin of former French president François Mitterand).

She was a teacher of classical literature (like her husband Yves Rouquette). The chance of appointments led them in the years 1964-1965 to the Lycée Joubert in Ancenis .
