Biography

Kristen Gerweck Diaz

Biography

  • Kristen Gerweck Diaz (formerly credited as Kristen Gerweck) is a versatile filmmaker whose diverse body of work reflects her commitment to crafting memorable cinematic experiences that leave a lasting impact on audiences.

Kristen received her J.D. from UCLA Law School where her studies focused on entertainment law and a concurrent study program with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Following her graduation, she practiced law in both New York and California, while continuing her studies of film/theater at the Beverly Hills Playhouse and UCLA.

Kristen wrote and directed her first short film, East Ramadi, which was chosen as one of five films to screen at the Cannes "Emerging Filmmaker Showcase." East Ramadi was picked up for distribution by "A Contracorriente Films" and screened in European theaters alongside the 2017 Oscar Nominee, Land of Mine.

Shortly after the success of East Ramadi, Kristen then wrote a female-driven crime drama, Diablo Loco. She received a deal with "Fullscreen" (NBC and AT&T's streaming venture) to develop the series as its exclusive writer and director.

For her second short film, Kristen wrote and directed The Wind Phone, which has screened at over 100 festivals worldwide, garnered over 50 awards, and earned an additional 21 nominations for Best Short Film, Best Direction, and Best Original Screenplay. The Wind Phone also qualified for the 2019 Academy Awards in the category of Best Live Action Short and has since been acquired by the Discover Indie Film series on Amazon Prime and Virgin Atlantic Airlines.

More recently, Kristen developed a scripted series based on a British sci-fi thriller novel for Shiny Penny Productions. Kristen is also adapting a science-fiction action thriller surrounding climate change for Atomic Features, and has several other sci-fi thriller features in development. Milk Baby, Kristen's third short film, had its premiere at the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival in August 2025.

Kristen also dedicates her time to speaking engagements that contemplate the importance of socially impactful filmmaking, most notably having been invited to share her insights at Yale University.
