Matias Zemljic

Biography

Matias Zemljic

Mini bio

  • Matías Zemljic is a Slovenian-Argentinian director, screenwriter and editor specialized in thrillers, science fiction and horror films. He is known for being one of the creators, along with his brother Pedro, of the Robbery Cassette saga (2017-), being the director of the docufiction feature film Sen 1991 (2021) (2021) and co-founder of Collapsys Pictures, an independent film production company.

He was born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1988. At the age of 8, he watched Back to the Future for the first time and decided to dedicate himself to cinema. Since he was 14 he hasn't stopped making movies. He borrows a Hi8 camera and shoots numerous short films. His greatest school of that early period is the never-finished feature film "Behind the Shadows of Death" (Tras las sombras de la muerte).

At the age of 18 he moved with his family to Slovenia where he improved his knowledge in editing, screenwriting and directing. He studied Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He has a Master in Screenwriting from the University of Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. He also attended an Advanced Course in Film Direction at the ESCAC in Barcelona, Spain.

His first action short film is Failure Situation (2008), which he wrote and directed together with the Mexican Francisco Amezcua. With him he also wrote and directed Jolly Roger (2010), a short film that combines science fiction, action and comedy, and which has become one of the most iconic short films by Matías Zemljic, having garnered awards at film festivals and with various screenings and retrospectives in Slovenia.

In 2011, with his brother Pedro Zemljic they founded the production company Collapsys Pictures with the intention of making genre films. Along with several collaborators, they made Markova ulica (2012), an action thriller, Sola y Blanco (2014), a horror short film, and began the mini series of Robbery Cassette (2017-) of which they have completed the First Season with two episodes so far and they plan two more.

Since 2018, he combines his work at Studio Siposh with independent productions at Collapsys Pictures and private script writing for Spain, generally collaborating with the Spanish screenwriter Raúl Barranco.
