Parents with Jeanne Boitel of François-Xavier Jaujard, he is the uncle of Jean Matthyssens.

Director of the École du Louvre and assistant director of the Musées nationaux, he was the main person responsible for hiding during WWII the works of art out of the museums and away from the Nazi plunderers. He was helped among others by André Chamson, Germain Bazin, René Huyghe and Rose Valland also in getting back the lost works.
