  • Was in Rangoon, Burma with the rank of major when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He joined General Stillwell and accompanied him on his walkout as Burma fell. Afterwards he was promoted to Brigadier General and became General Stillwell's assistant chief of staff for Plans and Operations.
  • Assigned to General MacArthur's staff in the Philippines as an intelligence officer.
  • In 1938 he served as an assistant military attache in Tokyo where he learned fluent Japanese. He remained there with his family almost until the outbreak of World War II.
