Whether I like it or not I'm attracted to the darker side of things. There's just so much complexity there, which in terms of cinema and writing is just beautiful.

I love filmmakers who also are artists. Panos Cosmatos is a particular example of this. Beyond The Black Rainbow (2010) is one of my favorite films of all time. A lot of people don't get it, and seem to want to heap hate on it because it's too slow, or it's too this, or too that, but you probably won't see another movie with quite as much emotion and limitless imagination as that one. As far as I'm concerned, if you want to make transcendent experiences at the cinema, it's mandatory viewing.

It's good to plan but it's also good to let your actors breathe. You can either strip the spontaneity out of everything and have something pristine, but in my opinion completely emotionally vacant in a genuine way, or you can take some risks. Things can get a little crazy, a little unorthodox. But at least you'll be running the risk of creating something people can have a genuine, visceral response to.

I love genre, and I love art. I don't think one or the other have to be mutually exclusive. When I write something, or I make a film, even if it's not something that calls for art, I still think it's possible to create a really poetic, interesting approach while not shying away from whatever the story needs to be.

Comedians can make the best horror movie villains, and the best horror movie directors. Jordan Peele obviously leads the way.
