Biography

Sharlene Chiu

Biography

  • Sharlene Chiu is television and video producer, director, writer and host who has been working in the industry for over 10 years. Notably, Sharlene helped launch MTV in Canada in 2006 and worked as a segment producer for its flagship show, MTV Live. This included producing a music segment that ran on the show called On the Radar, where Sharlene established an exceptional reputation for selecting and featuring up and coming independent bands. MTV Live won Best Talk Series at the 2008 Gemini Awards.

Sharlene also brought MTV News to Canada by introducing it as a segment on MTV Live, before evolving MTV News into a daily half-hour program. The original segment featured Sharlene Chiu reporting on-camera music trends and festivals around the world such as SXSW, Austin City Limits, Osheaga, Coachella, Bestival and T in the Park. Her likable charm and extensive research resulted in over hundreds of honest and entertaining interviews with a wide range of artists, including Kings of Leon, Coldplay, Vampire Weekend, Wyclef Jean, Mumford & Sons, Pharrell WIlliams, The Strokes and Rihanna.

After winning a Travel Journalism Award for Best in Broadcast for the special MTV News Pounds Britain, Sharlene created, produced, wrote and hosted Sharlene Vs. an MTV music travel series that took viewers beyond where the tourists go. In each city, Sharlene Chiu met artists of all kinds who took her under their wing, showing unique, off-the-beaten-track spots special to them and the personal stories behind each location. Cities explored on the show included Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Austin, Houston, Lyon, London, Isle of Wight, Reykjavik and Lisbon, and aired in prime-time on MTV.
