Gabriel Carrubba is an Australian filmmaker, writer, director and producer from Melbourne whose work is distinguished by its emotional honesty and character-driven storytelling.Born and raised in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, Carrubba developed a passion for the arts at an early age through creative writing.
At fifteen, after watching Stand By Me in a high school English class, he realised that storytelling would become a central part of his life. At seventeen, he left school to pursue a career in acting before studying Film and Television Production at JMC Academy, where he began forging a path as a multidisciplinary storyteller working across writing, directing and producing.
Carrubba gained widespread recognition with his debut feature film, Sunflower, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama exploring identity, masculinity and self-acceptance in suburban Melbourne. The film premiered at the Sydney Film Festival before screening at major Australian festivals, including the Melbourne International Film Festival and Adelaide Film Festival. It was also selected for Queer Screen's Goes to Cannes showcase at the Marché du Film, earning acclaim for its authentic and compassionate portrayal of queer youth.
Building on the success of Sunflower, Carrubba recently produced the sophomore feature film, River, a coming-of-age drama selected for the Adelaide Film Festival's Goes to Cannes initiative and which premiered internationally at the 66th Zlín Film Festival.
Following his departure from Pancake Originals, Carrubba has returned his focus to his roots as a writer and director, independently creating stories that explore themes of identity, belonging and human connection.
