Originally wanting to act - and realizing he wasn't very good at it - he tried his hand in writing, and at the age of ten wrote his first script. Trivia

  • He is the middle child with two other siblings. His oldest sibling has severe cerebral palsy.
  • Mackenzie has stated in the past that there were three films he watched at the age of seven that made him want to pursue film as a career. Those films were Psycho (1960), Night of the Living Dead (1968), and Eraserhead (1977).
  • Mackenzie's parents allowed him to watch more mature films at a younger age. They understood that he watched them to gain knowledge of how to film, and what it takes to make a great one. Also, unlike other children who would recite what they heard and saw in a mature film, Mackenzie wouldn't, and knowing this, was allowed to watch those types of films.
  • Mackenzie screened his first film, The End of Time, at a local competition in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he took home the top prize that evening for it.
