Before stepping into movies, Utthara had been a successful model in South. She started her modeling career at the age of 16 where she represented Bhima jewelers, Emmanuval Silks, Sri Kumarans, Dhathri Real Slim Oil and many others. She moved into Chennai with her family after school and did a couple of ad campaigns in Chennai. She completed her graduation in B. Sc. Visual Communication at SRM University and is pursuing masters in communication at MOP Vaishnav College for Women. Meanwhile she is also pursuing her second graduation in B.F.A. Bharathanatyam at Sastra University under Dr. Padma Subramanyam.
Uttharaa was born as the daughter of Urmila Unni and A. R. Unni. Her mother Urmila Unni is also a well known actor in the Malayalam film industry. Former actress Samyuktha Varma and south Indian actor Biju Menon are also her family members.
Utthara Unni is an upcoming actor who made her debut into movies through the Tamil film "Vavwal Pasanga" in 2012. She was soon opted as the main lead in the famous Malayalam director Lenin Rajendran's "Edavapaathy". The actress is also on the verge of completing shoot for her second Tamil movie titled "Enaku Vaytha Nanbargal Ippadi" which is being directed by A. Venkatesh.
