Biography

Annabel Maclean is an Australian-South African raised actor, screenwriter, and director whose work lives where grit meets soul, laced with a dry, comedic edge.

Raised in the small mining town of Phalaborwa, South Africa, and later Western Australia, Annabel has worked across Australia, Canada, and the U.S. Known for her emotionally fierce performances and darkly human, genre-bending scripts, her work explores survival, transformation, and moral gray zones, all with a blunt comic sensibility.

Trained at the Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute NYC, her on-screen highlights include playing Bobbi, the South African soccer player in EA Games' FIFA 20 (2019) FIFA 20: Volta Football, alongside a range of sharp, emotionally-charged roles that have screened at Whistler Film Festival, Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, and more. Her award-winning short Death of the Party (2020) was later acquired by Canadian broadcaster Super Channel.

Annabel's feature Tanami was a Second Rounder at Austin Film Festival, earning mentorship and industry attention from Rob Tapert of Ghost House Pictures (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) and Shayne Armstrong (Bait, The Darkness). She was also selected for the WIFT Australia x Cinefest Oz Writers Retreat with her comedy series Pain In My Ass.

Annabel recently made her directorial debut, Mr Big Hands, a childhood nightmare horror short that is a 2026 Seed & Spark staff pick. The film stars Clayton Farris (Weapons (2025), Cape Fear (2026)) and Natasha Estrada (Jump Scare (2025)), and was brought to life by a majority female cast and crew, part of Annabel's ongoing push to put more women in front of and behind the camera.
