1980 to 1989 employed as senior government official in the policy department of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, deputy press spokesman for the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs and Transport.

1987 to 1991 State Chairman of the Bavarian Junge Union, since 1993 Deputy District Chairman of the CSU Swabia. 1978 to 1988 Second Mayor and District Councilor; 1989 to 1994 Member of the European Parliament.

Member of the Bundestag since 1994; until November 2005 Vice Chairman of the CSU state group, foreign and European policy spokesman; since November 22, 2005 Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
