Mini bio

  • Matan Tal is a Berlin-based filmmaker working in essay film and desktop documentary. His films combine autobiography, cultural criticism, and formal experimentation, exploring memory, archives, and digital life with humor and irony.

Tal is known for The Invention of Chris Marker (2020), a desktop essay on cinema and legacy; The Same Snowy Ground (2021), an essay film about absence and historical loss; The Herzl Room (2023), an essayistic location-driven film; and My Sister Shira (2026). Across his work, he blends traditional cinematic language with screen recordings, found footage, and reflective narration, using filmmaking as a way of thinking out loud.

His films have screened internationally, including at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Berlin art-house cinemas Moviemento and Sputnik, and in a retrospective program at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 2019, Raindance Film Festival named him one of the "Top 10 Berlin Filmmakers to Watch."

Tal studied Film Studies at Tel Aviv University and has participated in development programs such as the Reykjavik Talent Lab, Venice International University Summer School, and the European Creators’ Lab.

  • Constructed The Invention of Chris Marker (2020) almost entirely from screen recordings and internet archives, without using much traditional camera footage.
  • Coined the term "Peter-Altenberg-ing" to describe his café-based method for writing essay film voiceover, inspired by Viennese writer Peter Altenberg.
  • Published his first small book at age 10, beginning a lifelong practice of writing alongside filmmaking.
  • Named by Raindance as one of the "Top 10 Berlin Filmmakers to Watch" in 2019.

Quotes

  • History is the enemy of the individual, And the whore of the details (sounds like: the whore of the individuals (in Hebrew)).
  • Essay films throw objectivity out the window-they are one person's approach to reality. The filmmaker is part of the story. It's inevitable.
