Younger half brother of fellow South African opening batsman Peter Kirsten.

First cricketer to score a test century against all 9 opponents active at the time. He achieved this feat scoring a century against Bangladesh in 2002.

His highest test score of 275 against England at Durban in 1998-99 is the second longest innings played by duration, lasting just over 14 and a half hours.

Wisden Cricketer of the Year, 2003.

Retired as South Africa's highest run scorer in both tests and ODIs. He was eventually overtaken by Jacques Kallis.
