Was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa to Chinese immigrant parents who escaped the Japanese occupation of Guangdong, China during World War II.

He obtained his substantial financial fortune by selling his two pharmaceutical companies: (1) In 2008, American Pharmaceutical Partners sold to Fresenius (of Germany) for $4.6 Billion. (2) In 2010, Abraxis BioScience sold to Celgene Biopharmaceutical Corporation for $3.8 Billion.

In 2010, Dr. Soon-Shiong bought Magic Johnson's 4.5% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers NBA Basketball team. He is a season ticket holder for the past 25 years. He has developed friendships with some of the prominent team players.
