Biography

Ruben Najera was born and raised in El Centro, Ca. which is located in Imperial County. Ruben is an award winning comic book writer with his hit series "Calaguerra" which in 2025 won an International Latino Book Award. Ruben has published work with Archie Comics , M House Publishing, and 10 Ton Press for the world renowned rock band Linkin Park. He is of Mexican descent, his mother is from Mexicali, Mexico and his father was born in the border city of Calexico, Ca. In his 20's Ruben had a career as a professional skateboarder and had numerous signature products for many well known brands in action sports industry. From his early sponsorship years on Tony Hawks Birdhouse Skateboards flow team to being introduced into the professional ranks with his professional model skate decks with Michigans "Six Starz skateboards" brand. At one point in time Ruben had record breaking sales with the Nestle company on his signature PowerBar boxes which sold in stores worldwide which were the equivalent of being featured on a Wheaties box. He was marketed in this campaign at the time alongside NBA superstar Blake Griffin. Ruben has been featured doing stunts in numerous music videos as well as producing and directing on various films. Ruben can be found monthly on his podcast "Passions Personified" which can be listened to on Spotify, Apple, and every major podcast platform in existence. In present day Ruben is working on his first studio music album with Grammy winning producer / mixer Matt Brownlie and former Nirvana cello player / composer Lori Goldston. Ruben now resides in Phoenix, Arizona.

Was the first skateboarder on earth to do a triple varial flip to manual. The triple varial flip is named the "Nar flip". Nar is his nickname and the trick is aptly named after him.

Has been invited numerous years as a celebrity guest to sign autographs at the world famous San Diego Comic Con since 2010. Ruben Najera is well known in the comic book community and has written and lettered on numerous titles as well for some of the top publishers including Archie Comics , M House Publishing, Bloodmoon Comics, and most recently for the band Linkin Park for their comic with 10 Ton Press.

In his skateboarding days Ruben was a former Guinness World Record holder for most consecutive 360 flips in under 1 minute. As well as one of the most sponsored action sports athletes in the world at the time.

I practiced the trick in complete darkness first so that when I would do it in the light, the confidence would be there. And it was.

[on growing up] I was always an outcast. When I started skateboarding it was actually not a cool thing to do. We were looked down upon and to the few skateboarders that we had around us I was still not accepted and "cool" enough. I didn't have the right gear and I didn't do the "right" tricks. I actually remember starting up my own skateboard team and recruited all of the misfits and kids that no one wanted in their crews. I essentially formed my own version of the X-Men and I was Professor X. We called ourselves the "Riot" skate crew and we would make a ton of skate videos . These early years were essentially my introduction to filmmaking , creativity, and the whole D.I.Y. lifestyle. I loved it!

Always be yourself. The truth is your individualism is the only true thing you have that's rightfully yours. Be proud of who you truly are and what you really like and are a fan of.

[on life] My complete outlook on life and success stems from skateboarding. You have to learn to accept falling and failing before you can succeed at anything. Failing is a part of the process once you accept that the fear goes away and the confidence grows stronger. Commitment and dedication is everything. Be prepared to fail numerous times and be prepared to earn your glorious success when it finally comes.

[on skateboarding] I used to play a lot of baseball and basketball when I was younger but I was always the kid on the bench that got stuck in left field during the last inning or was a last resort fill in on the court. During these times I experienced a lot of bullying by players and coaches as well. There came a point when I was extremely depressed but skateboarding saved me from that. With skateboarding I was attracted by the fact that I could do what I wanted, how I wanted, whenever I wanted! No sitting on the sidelines, no coaches yelling at me. I was the star and I could learn as many tricks as I wanted. It gave me a complete sense of freedom and accomplishment that I was missing all of my life. I love skateboarding it will never leave me.
