Biography

Joel Clark is an adventure filmmaker, director, and producer based in the Washington, D.C. area. As the founder of A Family Story Films, he has traveled to all seven continents producing documentaries, series, and films in some of the world's most isolated and dangerous locations. His work includes the feature documentary Coltan, the adventure documentary Hero with a Thousand Faces (2016), and the TV special Where the Wild Things Are (2021). Clark co-directed the short film Super (2014) with Jason Clark and directed the wilderness adventure short Wilderness (2013). He is also a New York Times bestselling author, having co-authored works alongside Mark Batterson and Donald Miller. Joel is married to Megan Clark, and they have two children.

His work spans justice-oriented documentaries covering child soldiers in Haiti, forced early marriages in Mozambique, the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, and the journey of undocumented immigrants, as well as adventure documentaries featuring expeditions to Antarctica and beyond. Clark's productions have been recognized at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, the Los Angeles International Film Festival, the Reel Heart International Film Festival, and the 168 Film Festival, where his work won Best Open Category Film. He has also received Telly Awards and a Chicago Screenplay Award. In addition to filmmaking, Clark is a published author whose fiction and nonfiction works have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Megan, their daughter Juno, and their son Elah.
