Kayla Tong

Biography

  • Kayla Tong is a director and cinematographer. Originating from Hong Kong and artistically molded during her formative years in Los Angeles, she has recently extended her creative scope to London, finding a new canvas for her explorations into diaspora and displacement. Kayla is an alumna of both the Asian Film Academy and the Armed with a Camera program, where she specialized in cinematography and directing, respectively. With a passion for blending her fiction and documentary crafts, her works have been unveiled at acclaimed festivals including Busan International Film Festival, the New Orleans Film Festival, the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival, and LA Shorts Fest. Additionally, her work has been spotlighted in The New Yorker Documentary Series and broadcast on KPBS. Her autobiographical film, 'Home is Where the Sunsets,' which she wrote, directed, and shot, garnered her the Best Director award at the Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival. A graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Kayla was also the recipient of the European Union's Erasmus Mundas Scholarship. Currently, Kayla is in the midst of bringing her debut feature film, 'Home/Land,' to life. The project has been selected to Docs by the Sea, EURODOC, and AIDC Cut to the Chase.
