Biography

Maxim Shavkin was a Russian filmmaker and screenwriter, known for his emotionally nuanced and visually minimalist films. A graduate of the Moscow School of New Cinema under the mentorship of director Dmitry Mamuliya, Shavkin's work gained international recognition early in his career.

His 2014 short film "14 Steps" was selected for the prestigious Cinéfondation program at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, one of only 18 films chosen worldwide. This selection marked a significant milestone in Shavkin's career and helped introduce his distinctive cinematic voice to an international audience. The film also won Best Short Film at the 36th Moscow International Film Festival.

In 2012, Shavkin directed "Us Alone" (Tolko Sami), a 52-minute feature exploring themes of isolation, intimacy, and the human condition. The film won several awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Festival of Author's Cinema "Listopad," the ArtKino Young Directors Festival, and the Audience Award at the Open Cinema Festival in Russia.

Another of his notable works is the short film "Silence", which was presented in student showcases and special programs, including the Kinoshok Festival.

Shavkin's cinematic style is characterized by naturalistic performances, contemplative pacing, and acute sensitivity to psychological detail. His films explore quiet moments of human vulnerability and the complexities of everyday life.

Tragically, Maxim Shavkin passed away in 2017 at the age of 29, but his body of work continues to be celebrated for its emotional honesty and artistic integrity.
