The best advice my father ever gave me was - "Hope for the best, and plan for the worst." That way you're prepared no matter what happens. The 2nd best wasn't advice, it was something he said when he gave me the keys to my first car - "I don't do bail." Transalation - don't ever do anything so stupid you need someone to come save you.
