Biography

Mickael Couturier

Biography

  • Mickaël Couturier is a French multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker and sculptor whose work spans film, photography, music, mosaic and large-scale environmental art. Originally from the South of France and trained at Les Beaux-Arts, his work uses storytelling to expose the human and environmental realities we too often choose not to see, transforming people, places and discarded materials into stories of beauty, resilience and change.

After beginning his career in illustration and creative direction, Couturier moved into music and filmmaking. His films, including "A Tramp in Eden" (2014), "Beetle Eyes" (2015), "Agora" (2016), "ILHA" (2020) and "The Art of Giving" (2023), have screened at more than 180 international festivals, including Cannes and LA Shorts Fest, and received numerous awards.

Based between Europe and Bali, Couturier founded Plastic Angels, an art project that transforms plastic recovered from beaches, and rivers into large-scale multimedia artworks. The project combines environmental storytelling with support for vulnerable communities in Bali, and most especially the children growing up around Bali's biggest landfill. One of his works, a portrait of Dr. Jane Goodall created from discarded flip-flops collected on the beach, was personally signed by Goodall.

His current project, Stella Earth, brings these disciplines together around Stella, a monumental 20-metre sea turtle made from recovered ocean plastic and intended to become the world's largest recycled-plastic sculpture upon completion.
