Father Bernard was a grain trader in Sosnowiec, Poland. He left Poland 7 days after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany with his wife Rochelle and daughter Julie on 31 August 1939. In America he became successful in the jewelry business.

In 1967 he was indicted in a federal tax shelter investigation. The charges were later dropped.

In 2007 he bought the Tribune Company, a major newspaper conglomerate, for $8.2 billion.
