André Lorenz Michiles, hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, boasts a diverse heritage that includes his father's Amazonian roots from the heart of the rainforest, originating in the small city of Maués. From a rich blend of Amazonian, German, and Portuguese backgrounds, he embodies a dynamic cultural tapestry.
As a young explorer, André's academic journey led him through the intricate maps of Geography at the University of São Paulo, where he ventured into ethnographic cinematography in the Xingu and Amazonia. Amidst his studies, he discovered the Laboratory of Image and Sound in Anthropology (LISA), a space where he harnessed the power of images and sounds to craft immersive stories.
His lens embarked on a global journey, capturing narratives across continents. From the soul-stirring landscapes of the Amazon to the vibrant spirit of Cuba in "Através" he embraced diverse cultures, shaping tales that bridge geographical divides.
"Segredos do Putumayo," "Através," and "Osvaldão" stand as testaments to his commitment to unveiling unfiltered human stories. Each project delves into the depths of existence, reflecting life's intricacies. All of them have been distributed in theaters, having been showcased at Brazil's premier festivals such as Brasilia, São Paulo, and Rio, as well as international events like HotDocs, Toronto, and Huelva.
Beyond his roles as a director and father, André finds solace in the realm of photography, collaborating with fellow directors and expanding his creative horizons. He was honored in 2023 with the award for Best Documentary Photography by the Brazilian Cinematographers Association (ABC).
